This is a relief printing process. A lino print is made by cutting shapes into the surface of a lino block using a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge carving away those areas that will not be inked and only show the white of the paper. Ink is applied to the uncut areas with a roller and these will be the marks which will print.
A monotype is a unique print which is created by using various methods of applying and
manipulating ink onto a plastic plate often using rollers, paintbrushes, rags etc. This is essentially one of a kind (akin to a painting) and cannot be repeated.
This technique relies on the surface quality of different materials as in a collage. These are glued
to a rigid surface to produce an image and then sealed with shellac varnish. A collagraph can be inked relief or intaglio, or viscosity inked incorporating both the raised and recessed areas of the print block at the same time.
